ThepracticeofPhilosophyservestoanswerthefundamentalquestions:Wheredid we comefrom?Whoareweandwhatisourpurpose?Wherearewegoingordowewanttogo?Answeringthefundamentalquestionsofourexistenceandguidingourselvesinourlifeproject,throughtheuseofPracticalPhilosophyforourself-developmentandpersonalgrowth,requiresthefocusonthreefundamentalaspects:
Thethirdfocusshouldbethewilltohaveameaningforlife.ThemeaningforLifeisthecornerstoneofthehumanconditionitself.Itisnotenoughtolive,tospendthedaysincountlesstasks.WewanttoliveaLifethatmakessense,thatisworthwhile,thathasvalueinitself.AlifewithmeaningisfundamentaltoafullLife.Tobuilditwemustexerciseourbestinnateabilities such as:willpower,loveandempathy,creativity,courageandresilience,attentionandservicetoothers.Thepracticeandimprovementofvirtuesandthecorrectionofdefects,propertothehumanbeing,giveameaningforeachonetofulfillhispurpose,themeaningforandofhisLife.
1. LIVE ACCORDING TO NATURE: ForStoicPhilosophy,thebestwaytoliveourlives,thatitisworthlivingandfindingameaningorpurpose,istoliveitaccordingtonature–humannature.Inpractice,thismeantstudyingthreeinterrelatedthemes:
I. THE ‘PHYSICS’:stoicsunderstoodphysicsasthestudyofnaturalsciences,aswellasmetaphysics.Understandhoweverythingisorganizedintheworld.
3.THEDICHOTOMYOFCONTROL: ThedichotomyofcontrolisoneofthefundamentalconceptsofStoicPhilosophy.Whatdoesthatmean?Verysimple.Thereareeventsthatdependonusandothersthatdon’t.Forthis,thefundamentalpracticemustbetoputourenergyintotheeventsthatwecancontrolandmoveasfarawayaspossible from thosewecannotcontrol.Ofcourseit’seasytosaybuthardtopractice.Forthisreason,repeatedpracticeisindispensableforittobeinternalized.
